Goal setting is something you cannot do without if you want to be successful in anything.
“The real value in setting goals is not in their achievement. The acquisition of the things you want is strictly secondary. The major reason for setting goals is to compel you to become the person it takes to achieve them,” Jim Rohn says.
For example, if you want to be a millionaire, the greatest value you would get is not the million dollar money you have acquired but the skill, discipline, experience you would have gotten on your way to becoming a million dollar entrepreneur.
To achieve anything, first ask yourself what skills you need to acquire to take you to where you need to be. Note them down and start acquiring those skills.

‘Goal,’ as defined by Latham & Locke (2002, p.705) are “the object or aim of an action, for example, to attain a specific standard of proficiency, usually within a specified time limit.”
Goals are the things you want to achieve. Example of goals are to travel round the world, buy a house or build a business etc.
Goal setting on the other hand is the process for achieving these goals. When Andrew Carnegie died, they found a paper containing his life goals he wrote when he was 20. In the paper, he stated,
“I am going to spend the first part of my life acquiring money and I am going to spend the last part of my life sharing money.” What a goal!
He was so inspired by that goal that in the first part of his life, he accumulated $ 400 million and he gave it all away.
Goals are like magnet
They pull you into your desired future. The stronger your goals are, the more purposeful they are, the more unique and the bigger they are, the more stronger they pull you in the direction of your dream.
Decades of research about how the human mind works has proven that for our brains to help us get what we want, we have to first decide and let it know what we want.
Once we list down our desires through goal setting, your mind steps in to make your desire happen.
The brain is a goal setting machine. Whenever you give your subconscious mind a goal you want to achieve, the brain goes out to look for information, people, opportunities and resources to bring it to pass.

Before I came across goal setting, I used to wake up and start doing anything that comes my way or whatever I remember that needs to be done.
Looking at my life,I discovered that I never achieved much before the day winds up.
When I started implementing what I learnt about goal setting, things took a different shape. Most of my goals were achieved. Goal setting helped me become intentional with my life.
Without planning your day and life through goal setting, you can easily settle for economic existence and also settle for necessity rather than substance.

Why do I Need to Set Goals?
Goal setting gives you the opportunity to experience the power of your imagination. See it this way, your imagination is where everything tangible and intangible originates from.
The power of your imagination can conquer anything and can attract a lot of good or bad to you depending on what you are feeding it with.
According to Jack Canfield featured in the Secret video, to effectively fully utilise the power of your subconscious mind, a goal has to be specific and measurable. Your goal needs to be able to answer the questions when, how much, what (in details down to the colour).
When there is no criteria for measurement, it becomes simply a mere wish, a preference or a good idea but does not register in your mind as a goal. So, the mind has nothing to work with.

The major thing that separates successful people from unsuccessful people is that majority of successful people are crystal clear about their vision for their life and business, they make it clear on paper and follow them through.
They take small steps on a daily basis on acquiring the necessary skills for achieving their goals and dreams. That’s easy right? But why are so many people not doing it?

What Kind of Goal Should You Set? Goal Setting the SMART Way
You need to set SMART goals. SMART goals will always keep you on track towards actualizing your dreams as it will give you clarity and focus..

What is SMART goal setting?
SMART means specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bounded.
You have a better chance of achieving SMART goals that are not general but specific. Vague goals that don’t have a deadline and not specific like I want to make money instead of I will make $70,000 extra income from 1st -30th of May, 2020 will lead you no where.
S – Specific
Your goal must be specific and clear to anyone that reads it. It must not be vague. It must be precise, detailed and be capable of answering questions without creating one.
Ambiguous goals yield ambiguous results. When we are specific, you utilise the power of your dreams and set forces into motion that enable you achieve your goals.
When your goals are specific and precise, they act as magnets that draw you to them.
M – Measurable
They must have a date, financial figures, amount and specific time. It should not be “I will loose so much weight this year” Instead it should be “I will loose 2 pounds by 1st of October,2020.
You may also decide to break your goals into steps, but ensure that the steps are measurable too. This helps you to know how you are measuring up as you work towards the actualization of your goals.
A – Attainable
The goal must be achievable. An attainable goal is one that is realistic and doable. It must be something that can be done within the constraint of time, money, available resources, skills and so on.
It is also recommended that you set for yourself goals that you will have to push yourself to achieve and go ahead and achieve them.
R – Realistic
Any goal you set should line up with where you are heading to in life. This means your goals should be consistent with your purpose in life. You don’t need to waste your time setting goals on areas you don’t have interest in following through.
Set goals you actually want to achieve and ensure they are realistic and actionable. Example: lets say you are over weight and want to loose 200 pounds.
If your goal is to loose 200 pounds in 2 weeks, its unrealistic. If you say you would loose 200 pounds in 15 months or two years and break it down into months, it’s realistic and actionable.

T – Time Bound
You should always give your goal a deadline within which it must be done. Giving your goal a date for completion gives you the motivations to see it through.
It’s o.k if you don’t achieve your goals on the specific date set. If that happens, re- adjust and keep moving forward.

To start setting goals, you will need a planner. Panda planner is the best planner I have come across. There are other good planners out there, but this is my #1. Keeping a daily journal will help you keep track of your goals.
In life, there are certain things that affect and change the course of our lives. They are our environment, events, knowledge or ignorance, results and our dreams or visions.
We are greatly affected or pulled by our dreams and visions of the future.
Make sure that the greatest pull on your life is the pull of the future (your vision)
If your life’s purpose and objectives are not well planned, they won’t have the power to pull you in the direction of actualising your dreams.
This means that when life throws you a challenge, you would easily be pulled apart by misfortunes because your dreams are not strong enough to pull you through tough times.
You need to re-design your future so your greatest focus and attention pulls you forward into your future to accomplish your dreams.
So, how do I set goals ?
The major reason to set goal is because of what it makes you do to accomplish it. It causes you to stretch in several ways you may never have before. In the process working towards achieving your goals, you change and become better.
A powerful goal. must be:
- Able to be acted on .
When your goals inspire you, and you believe and act on them, you would accomplish them.
Here are Steps For Creating Powerful Goals
1. To set powerful goals you have to first set aside some time and do some evaluation and reflection. You have to decide where you are now and the level of satisfaction you have where you are now in life. To do this, find a quiet place without distractions at least once a week or once a month or every quarter. Whatever works for you.
Then look at what you have accomplished in the past and where you are now. Be brutally honest with yourself.
Next, write it down in your journal as this will help you in the next stage of evaluation.
After that, set your goal. Stretch yourself according to what works for you.
Evaluation helps you know where you are now to help you determine where to go next. It brings you face to face with who you are and what you have become. It also gives you the time to dream, look deep inside you and create a vision of what you want to become next.
If you don’t evaluate, you will find yourself going through life living by the forces of culture, societal pressures, circumstances and most times personal weaknesses.

2. Decide what your dream and goals are.Your dreams and goals are what you want and don’t have yet.
Have you ever at any time sat down to think about your life’s values and decided on what you really want? Not what someone else like your parents, friends, spouse etc. want you to be.
Your dreams and your goals are unique to you and that is only what you should seek to achieve because that is what you were created and gifted to become.
So, find out what your dreams are. We were all born with one. Look very deep inside you. You will find yours.
Your dreams may live right on the surface or be buried within you because of years of people telling you they were stupid, but they are still there and you can dig them out.
When you find those dreams, you need to lay down a strategic line of action to bring them to past.
Let’s go through this step by step process to unleash the power of the dreams inside you.
How do you find out what your dreams are?
To find your dream or purpose first listen to yourself not to others.
When you listen to others including your parents, you will only hear their plans and dreams. Most times, others will force their plans and dreams on you.
If you listen to them, you will never be fulfilled because you would be chasing elusive dreams that are not rooted inside you!
So, quieten yourself and listen for your passion and desires unique to only you.
Take some time out to be quiet. Shut down the noise from social media, TV, radio, other people and activities.
Don’t deceive yourself with being busy. You have to constantly ask yourself if the activities you busy your time with everyday are getting you closer to your dream. If not eliminate them.
While you are quiet, think about what thrills you. What things get your blood burning? What will you love to do for fun or with your life? What would you love to achieve? What would you try doing if you have the guarantee it would succeed? What big thoughts makes you so excited?
Find your dream and when you do, no other thing matters.
Go on and make a list of those dreams in their order of importance to you. Don’t think of any as foolish. Start working on achieving them according to how important each is to you.
Life is too short for you not to achieve your dreams. At the end of the day, you should be able to reflect with joy and not regret.
Those who dream, set goals and act on them will live a life of joy and have a sense of peace when they near the end of their lives. So, get to work!
3. Your goal must be SMART like I have said above. Must be specific, attainable, time-sensitive, believable and measurable.
4. You must be accountable for your set goals to both yourself and to someone else that is not a pessimist but an optimist.
You need to tell someone else your goal so the person would hold you accountable for achieving them. The person should be someone who would be hard on you and brutally honest with you. This will give you an added boost to accomplish your goals because when you know the person would ask, you get determined to accomplish it.
If you are able to follow these four principles of goal setting, you put yourself in a position of power that will catapult you into having the kind of life you want.

Find a reason for your goals. The why for your goals matter a lot. Facebook after revealing its 10 years goal, Mark Zuckerberg said that 4 billion people are not on the internet as of 2016 and further stated:
“And we need to change this,” Zuckerberg says. “Because, beyond communication, we know that for every 10 people who get online, about one person gets lifted out of poverty because they get access to tools for education and finding jobs.”
You see, the reason “to get people lifted out of poverty” is a very powerful motivator. John Rohn said,”
if you have enough reasons, you can change anything including your life, financial status, name it. Life has a way of keeping all the answers and gives it up only to those who have enough reasons.
You don’t get what you seek until you have a reason why you must have it.
What has got you turned on? What keeps you awake at night working on your desk till morning? What gets you turned off? When I got the answers to these questions, my life exploded into change. You need to get a list of reasons to turn you on.
Your reason for wanting to be wealthy may be so people recorgnize you or so your family will not look down on you. Whatever it may be get them attached to your goals.
Wealth is not a matter of intelligence, its a matter of inspiration. You may not have all the answers right away but you will get the answer if you can get a reason.
